No More Feet!

Today is Wheels Day! We got to bring remote control cars, scooters, bikes, skateboards, rollerblades, prams, hot wheels and heelies to school. We were lucky and were the first year group to go outside to enjoy our wheels!

Later Room 16 designed a bike or scooter for the future.

Wheels Day rocks! (Oops, we mean, rolls!)

Art Exhibition

Room 16 made beautiful bird cushions. They are colourful, bright and cool.

We drew sketches of all the parts of the birds and chose our favourite sketch. We copied it onto a big piece of paper and then dyed it.

The next day we drew the real sketch, put it underneath the fabric and copied it. We painted the fabric with textile ink and left it to dry.

We also did the back of the cushion with our name.

When they were sewn together, we were able to display them in the school art exhibition. Don't they look great?!

Jelly Crystals

We made green jelly with chocolate frogs in them. It was called Frog in the Pond.

We opened the jelly crystal pack, then poured the jelly crystals into a bowl. Then we poured hot water in the bowl. Next, we mixed the jelly crystals with the hot water. We got a cup to pour the jelly into our plastic cups. Then we let the hot water in the jelly cool down.

We put the unset jelly in the fridge to cool some more.

At the end of the day we ate it. It was yum!

Treading Tuesday

Today Room 16 and Room 4 were invited to a Treading Tuesday feast. This was because we are the class that had the most people walk to school on Tuesdays during Term Three. We had morning tea, quizzes, games like traffic light and a certificate plus heaps of pens and rubbers. We had awesome fun!

Botany Light Festival

Room 16 worked with Ashley and Raewyn from Uxbridge Arts, to make lanterns. We had to bend and tape the wood into circles and then cover the whole thing with plastic. Inside are two little lights that keep changing colour when you turn them on.

Last night we paraded with six other schools at the Botany Light Festival. The parade was a bit shorter than it was supposed to be, because it was raining. We didn't mind though, because it was still a lot of fun! We hope you enjoy these photos of us making and parading our lanterns.

If you'd like to know how to make a lantern, then read the instructions below.

Making Lanterns
By Kevin

If you follow these steps you will make a beautiful lantern.

You will need:

• Cable tie
• Six thin strips of wood
• Scissors
• Tape
• Bamboo stick
• Strong glad wrap
• Two finger lights
• Hook

1. Make the thin strips of wood into circles the same size using the tape to hold them.
2. Tape three circles together to make a ball shape. Do this with the other three circles.
3. Join the ball shapes together with the tape.
4. Tape the finger lights onto the inside.
5. Make the cable tie into a circle and tape it to the top.
6. Wrap it with glad wrap.
7. Cut a hole in the lantern.
8. Tape a hook onto the end of the bamboo stick and hook it onto the cable tie inside the lantern.

Now turn the lights on!

Run Room 16, Run!

Today was Point View School's cross country. The Year 3 boys ran first and then the Year 3 girls. Daniel came third in the boys race. Room 16 did really well in the girls race. Armani was second, Jarnah was third, Brooklyn was sixth and Selena came tenth. It started raining while the Year 4s were running, so we were lucky not to get too wet! We are really proud of ourselves, and especially proud of our place getters.

The Wonderful Zoo Trip

Yesterday Room 16 visited Auckland Zoo. We went there to learn about animal patterns for our work for the art exhibition next term.
We split into groups and walked around looking at the animals. The weather was mostly fine, which meant that most of the animals were active. We thought the otters were cute and crazy, because they were showing off in the water. The spider monkeys were cuddled up in their hut when it was raining.
At 12 o'clock we went into the Kahurangi room. Helene talked to us about why animals have different patterns on their fur. One of the reasons is so that you can tell which animal is which. They also have these patterns to camouflage them, so they can hunt for food without being seen, or so that they can hide from their predators. Each animal's pattern is unique.
The zoo trip was really interesting and we learnt an awful lot!

Buried Alive in Milk Bottles!

We've almost made our target of 500 milk bottles and have found ourselves buried in them! The bottles that have had cream in them are very difficult to clean, so we send those ones for recycling. Next week we finally get to start building our igloo.

Milk Bottle Mania!

We're going to build a milk bottle igloo! To do that we need to collect lots of milk bottles. So far we have 260 and people are still bringing them in. Each bottle is worth 5 house points.

When people bring the bottles in, we ask them which house they are in and award them the right number of house points. Then the bottles go to the washing station. When we have time we clean them, by shaking them with water in them and wiping the tops with a cloth. After that they are left to dry. We tie them in bundles of 10 so they are easy to count.

When we have 500 bottles, we'll begin building our igloo. Watch this space!

Colour Bursts

We've been creating exciting colour bursts in our art time. First we studied the primary colours (red, blue and yellow) and the secondary colours (orange, purple and green) and chose a primary colour for the centre of our work. Then we mixed different colours of paint to create the other colours in the rings. When our work was dry we discussed contrasting colours, by looking at opposite sides of the colour wheel. We used pastel to make extraordinary patterns on top of the paint. Don't they look fabulous?!

What Materials Make Good Roofs?

Room 16 has been investigating what materials make good roofs. We experimented with metal (tinfoil), cloth, plastic and wood. We made a roof out of each material and stuck them to walls made from a milk bottle. We tested each roof in different weather conditions. A toaster was used to provide heat like the sun, water from the tap for rain, and a fan for wind. We decided that plastic and cloth were not very good roof material. Alec's group had a roof made of plastic that melted! Metal and wood were better.

Medieval Feast

We had a medieval feast at the end of last term to celebrate our learning about the Middle Ages.

Room 16 made the potage, which is like vegetable soup. It was hard work peeling all the potatoes and carrots, but the end result was worth it! It was yummy!

We had some important guests at our feast, including a jester, who looked very familiar. She caused problems by running around the Great Hall and stealing our crowns, which we had made ourselves using papier mache.

We've never had a meal quite like it!
Welcome to Room 16's new blog!
